When choosing a smart home hub, two of the most significant considerations should be connectivity and compatibility. At its simplest, connectivity allows one device to discover and recognize another on a network and form a link. There are thousands of devices from hundreds of manufacturers, and not all hubs will work with all devices. No matter how cheap or how good the display, speaker, or design is, if your chosen product doesn’t connect or isn’t compatible with your hub, you won’t be able to use it to its full potential—if at all. Cheapest Smart Home for $38
You can use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or most other devices to control the accessories in your smart home just fine without a hub. If you are willing to deviate away from a total Apple ecosystem, this option can be the cheapest and the one with the most freedom to do whatever you like. As HomeKit represents just one part of the DIY method, you have the ability to integrate more products that normally couldn't be used. Integrating Nest into a HomeKit environment is usually difficult, but with this, you just add the Nest devices to Home Assistant directly. This way, you can mix and match the products that are best for you without restrictions from manufacturers. The reason it could be free is that if you have an iPad running iOS 10 or later, it can be used as a HomeKit hub.
It’s important to note that Z-Wave only provides the means of communication between smart devices. What you can do with those devices, and the automation rules that you can create, is dependent on the capabilities your Z-Wave hub and it’s software. Z-Wave is a completely isolated communication system tailored to smart devices and is built around a dedicated local network just for those that doesn’t require an internet connection.
Best for HomeKit
Hubs can control the transmission of communication between the diverse devices. Variations in implementation of the control messages used by devices mean that not everything works as expected on every hub, and we still have to deal with the idea of ‘supported’ devices on a brand-by-brand basis. Those non-supported devices will still work as all Z-Wave devices must be certified to the basic specification, but a given hub may need some extra work to fully use a particular devices additional capabilities. It may not make sense to turn them on every time, but only when the ambient light is low enough. A condition tied to a light sensor can make this simple action much smarter, and can be further extended with presence and time of day conditions to trigger different light states.
The Apple TV 4kWhile the HomePod Mini is the new, cool kid, the Apple TV 4K still has its time to shine. That time is when it comes down to reliability, which is defined here as being how much you can count on your hub to work. At 179$ for the cheapest model, this isn't the most budget-friendly option by any stretch. There is nothing wrong with the HomePod per se, but the advantage of the TV 4K is that it has an RJ45 connector on the back for a wired network connection. As a result, most homes will benefit from this little feature as it will work regardless of the state of your WiFi. The same can not be said for all of the other hubs as they all make use of WiFi.

Just remember that the Z-Stick is only an adapter and you’ll need to be running compatible software on the host computer. Even so, this integration is often done outside of the device itself, either by a skill or plugin for the controller software, a third party accessory, or a separate web service to act as a go between. The complexity and reliability of whatever solution is used can vary, but it’s getting better in general. By setting up such a system as a home server you gain the maximum level of control and privacy on offer. Supported software include the open source options OpenHab, Home Assistant, and Domoticz, and the commercial offerings from HomeSeer, Axial, and Indigo Domotics. Even if a device isn’t directly compatible with a protocol, you may still be able to use it via the software it supports. I typically turn to Ikea’s Tradfri or eWeLink’s Sonoff ranges of switches and sensors.
