When police and fire personnel arrived at the scene, they found that the single-family home had been leveled by the explosion, leaving only the basement behind, with a debris field covering approximately two acres of the property. Around-the-clock plowing has been underway in the area but it could take more than a week to reach some areas, said Dawn Rowe, chair of the county's board of supervisors. Residents are dealing with as much as 7 feet of snow, and sheriffs' personnel have conducted 17 rescue operations to help off-roaders and skiers.

Michigan authorities are investigating a fatal house explosion that happened in Whitmore Lake on Saturday. Three victims were found dead at the scene, and three others were transported to a nearby hospital. One of the three taken to the hospital died later, police said.

FOX 2 Detroit reported that the explosion took place on Winters Lane. Police have not released the number of fatalities, but Huron Valley Ambulance spokesperson Marc Breckenridge told MLive Media Group that four people were found dead. Three people were initially found deceased in the home, while a fourth succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Two other people were hospitalized and last reported to be in critical condition. A wide swath of ground surrounding the home's hollowed-out basement was covered with splintered wood debris Saturday, aerial footage shows. The charred husk of a car could also be seen near where the outside walls of the home once stood in Whitmore Lake, a rural community about 12 miles north of Ann Arbor.

Lyman says a crucial part of the investigation will be insight from the explosion survivors. "All of a sudden, there was this loud boom, like it shook me," Dehoney told NBC affiliate WBAL. "I've never heard anything like it in my life. I didn't know what it was."
